Job Interview Protip

If you're meeting a female professor (let's say, purely for the sake of example, my wife) and you haven't even completed your PHD, but are on a job interview, do not repeatedly refer to her as "kiddo." Even if you are 50 years old.

Then do not proceed to call a male graduate student "sir" and treat them with utmost respect later.

So she prefers "ma'am"?

Ahhhhh-misogynistic old farts: making social disconnect funny all over again.

Agreed the proper terms instead of "kiddo" and "sir" should be "Cutie McHotpants" and "His Royal Majesty" respectively.

Why is anyone even interviewing 50-year-olds? Report them to the Sandmen, for Christ's sake!

I've interviewed lots of people, but none was as annoying as the guy who kept referring to me as "Petey Boy". "Petey Boy, I think you and me'd make one hell of a team" "Petey Boy, I think I can sell the balls off of this recycling thing, I mean, who the F is against recycling?"...

The guy is maybe 65, big cornfed sum'bich. Drives this black, supercharged Chrysler 300 SRT8 that literally could outrun the Word of God. Sounds like a cross between a nuclear warhead test and Mufasa roaring when it fires up. Amazing car. So jealous.

I hired him on the spot just because a man with personality is better than an Armani with no soul. Turns out we became really good friends and he ended up being one of the best salesmen I ever had. He's retiring this year, and I'm really sad about it.

Don't know why this matters, but I thought I'd share. I guess you can't always look at someone at face value.

Your momma will not be proud, Petey Boy. Giving up vulgarity for lent? Well, you just made the baby Jesus cry. Not even one whole day without cussing - how disappointing.

I think Lent doesn't start until tomorrow...so he's still in the clear.

(In fact, today would be 'F:AT Tuesday' hardy, har, har...)

He wouldn't, perchance, have come out of Georgetown, would he? This sounds rather remarkably like a grad school buddy who decided to go for his PhD after a 20-year career in the Marine Corps. He was a righteous dude all in all, but he could shift into that slightly patronizing "boys hangin' at the O-club" kind of demeanor very quickly.

Actually, thinking back on the former-military I knew in grad school and knowing nothing else about the dude--if he's calling all the male grad students "sir", my first bet would be a long NCO career as they tend to spend so much of their lives calling guys younger than them "sir" that it's become an autonomic function.

Around these parts it starts on Ash Wednesday. And since Petey Boy mentioned he's Catholic... yeah, pretty sure the baby Jesus is weeping already.

Dog: Nope, North Texas or UT Dallas PHD IIRC. He also apparently referred to our nobel laureate as "little girl" in a conversation with our department chair.

Wow. That's a special one, right there.... You said he hasn't finished his PhD--so he hasn't defended his diss yet? The academic community ain't that big. One or 2 phone calls and he'll be revising until he's collecting Social Security.

Nope, hasn't defended yet.

This was not a great job interview strategy, word definitely gets around.

Eventually guys like that get punched hard in the mouth. The only sad thing is that you can't be there to witness it.
