Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)
Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.
We are really happy to have you here. Unfortunately, being online we can't bond with you over a game so you'd know right away how happy we are to meet you. For now, you'll just have to take our word for it.
This site has always thrived on lively discussion and spirited but civil debate. We hope that newcomers here will find a welcoming atmosphere where game enthusiasts of all levels of experience and commitment will have something to add to the conversation. You never need to prove your “gamer cred” here. Whether you have been playing board games for a few months or a few decades; whether you have a huge collection or a small one; whether you have been a member here for years or just joined today – your opinion is valued here.
We know that it can be intimidating to jump into a new community and want to assure you that this is NOT the kind of forum where people will tell you that you posted something in the wrong place, or that you should have found an existing thread on the topic, or that you shouldn’t have resurrected an old thread.
So if you find a thread or an article discussion that interests you, whether it is old or new, feel free to jump in. Want to discuss a specific game or board gaming related topic just start a new topic. If you don’t know which forum to put it in, just make your best guess (we really don’t care all that much. It’s easy enough for a moderator to move it or merge it, if necessary).
A good place to get started is by introducing yourself in the “New Members Introduce Yourself” thread (below) or by telling us what you have been playing in the “What BOARD GAME(s) have you been playing?" thread ( therewillbe.games/forum/35-mos-eisley-ca...ave-you-been-playing ).
Have fun, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Shrieking Emu wrote: Howdy all. Been meaning to join up here for a while and finally bit the bullet today. I'm Cody Jones, and I'm one of the hosts of the Game On! with Cody and John podcast. I started playing with M:tG in middle school which led into D&D 1st and 2nd ed, which led to Talisman, which led me to a ton of games after that. I'm friends with AT'er Dair (wdgrant) and we play a good deal of games together.
Hey Cody! Glad to see you on here.

You mad impetuous fool, mentioning that here! Even now, hordes of new adminions are scurrying to their keyboards to backtrack and uncover accounts created near your location.
" Guy clearly doesn't have a girlfriend so I'm keeping him off the streets."
Why do that? If he were on the streets, he'd probably get mugged...
Sekigahara is getting mentioned here by a few people, more than I expected. That's definitely a good sign.

Fallen wrote: My name is Jamie; I live in Calgary Ab, and have been a board game collector for about 10 years now. The first (non monopoly /family/party) game I remember playing was Starfarers of Catan, followed by Nautilus. I was hooked from then on. For the most part I prefer Euro games, but there are times when a good aggressive Ameritrash game is in order. The game that always seems to come out in bigger groups lately is Bootlegger.
Jamie, are you going to FallCon, Oct 14-16th?

I have not registered for any games yet, and may just open game there.
I think I started going to it in 04, but I don't remember correctly. Look me up, I will be wearing the short with the ToonCon logo (2 green dice)

Technically, I created my account 17 months ago, but only lurked once in a Blue Moon and didn't make my first post until today after the Mayday Games/Kingdom Builder bullshit. It was about two years ago that I realized my gaming tastes were changing and I found myself getting sick and tired of playing worker placement Euros set in some past age, typically some European country or Kingdom, competing for the favor of some King or whatever by building a Cathedral, Castle, Empire...yada, yada, yada. I heard this site was the where the cool kids hung out while the sycophants and sheep wasted time on BGG.
I started out as a child playing whatever my parents bought, which was usually some Abstract like Backgammon, Checkers and Chess, or some old roll and move like Monopoly, Chutes and Ladders, Candyland, Sorry, Life and many others. Eventually, we started getting more games that looked cool to us like the Gamemaster Series from Milton Bradley and staples like Risk.
Then came RPG's. Of course there was D&D. Around the same time I was exposed to this game, I was exposed to games like Nuclear War, Titan, Junta, Illuminati, Car Wars, OGRE, RoboRally, Diplomacy, Acquire, Cosmic Encounter, Borderlands and the OG Arkham Horror game from Chaosium and more.
Then came my miniature war gaming phase and my CCG phase.
I used to stop by at our local game store, Ground Zero Hobbies (formerly Comics) after school. There, gamers would play Battletech. The 'Mechs looked pretty badass and even though the bookkeeping looked tedious, I was used to doing a ton of research and writing for D&D, so if I could handle that, I figured I was fine. 20 years later, I've taught it to my wife and kids. We now each have our own mechs and we break it out on weekends to resolve our differences through Lasers, Autocannons, Missiles, PPC's and Gauss Rifles! Never was I more proud than when my eldest son literally kicked me when I was down, finishing my Daishi/Dire Wolf off with a determined kick from his Marauder!
I picked up the first Warhammer 40k book, the Rogue Trader one with the Crimson Fist "Beakies" on the cover. I loved that era of 40k, where imagination was just as important as anything else. Custom hand crafted vehicles, and a strong RPG influence. Back then, the races of 40k were roughly analogous to the Warhammer Fantasy races. Eldar were clearly Elves, Dark Eldar are Dark Elves, Orcs became Space Orks, and the Imperial Forces roughly matched up with the Brettonians. Then there were the 40k Squats that were clearly Space Dwarves. They looked like kickass, bearded tin cans! Then slowly but surely, GW started changing more and more of the fluff and released version after version and edition after edition of the core rules and the subsequent flurry of Codices. For those that have gotten into 40k more recently, the changes were less drastic and I'm sure, more tolerable, but I grew tired of forking over money for new shit that rendered my old shit outdated. Stand alone games like Man O' War, Battlefleet Gothic, Talisman, Space Hulk, Necromunda, Warhammer Quest and Blood Bowl were fine since once you had at least one copy of the base game in your group of gamers, along with the miniature(s) for your small faction, you were set. Not so in 40k, where you could find that half or more of your army wasn't in the next Codex. If your group went along with the editions and refused to play older editions and rules, you were out of luck. So, on to the next money pit, CCGs!
My first exposure to CCGs was like many others', Magic: The Gathering. I played, and was good, but the theme just didn't do it for me. I was more of a Sci-Fi, Tech-Battle type of guy, having spent 6 years or so in Hawaii, which is almost as Japanese as Japan. I grew up watching Gundam, Ultraman, Macross, Space Battleship Yamato and other Anime TV Series and Movies. I wanted a fusilade of little can-shaped missiles, not wizards summoning crap and shooting lighting and Fireballs at each other like Sith Lords. So I moved onto a game with a great theme, but only average gameplay, Doomtrooper. Then came Jyhad (later V:TES), L5R, Middle Earth, Mythos, Netrunner, Doomtown, Shadowrun, Battletech...etc.
It was probably sometime around the late Nineties to early Aughts, I would occasionally play a couple of games that I heard were imported from Germany. Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne. They were interesting, but lacking in enough direct confrontation for my liking and damn were the themes dull. The trading and negotiation aspect was interesting and reminded me of Borderlands, only minus the direct conflict. Carcassonne immediately struck me as a farm and country themed game of dominoes. Meh.
Thankfully, my time playing CCG's and Tabletop Mini Wargames was coming to a close as I was left with more and more dead CCG's and nobody willing to continue playing them. It was either Magic or 40k round my parts. Then I started seeing more and better board games being cranked out. I sold much of my CCG collection, including 40,000+ Jyhad/V:TES cards for thousands and started my Board Game collecting!
I'm hskrfn822 on BGG. Feel free to poke around and check out what my collection looks like. It's pretty diverse since I buy games from all genres with all sorts of mechanics. I personally like conflict heavy, thematic dicefests, but I'll play almost any game with cool people. There's no point to owning what you might find to be the best games on Earth if your group is full of casual, light Euro or Family gamers.
Notable favorites amongst my Ameritrash games are oldies but goodies like Illuminati, Junta, Cosmic Encounter Dune and Diplomacy, as well as newer games (including reprints) like Twilight Imperium, Arkham Horror, Space Hulk, Earth Reborn, Last Night on Earth, Chaos in the Old World, Nexus Ops.
After realizing that I had spent over $10,000 on board games over the past 2-3 years, I began culling. I had amassed way to many average and below average Euros over the years. That's what happens when I have poor impulse control, money in the bank, and visit sites like Tanga, Pozy and GameOfTheDay. Way too many Euros for my liking, but my primary gaming group right now is my family and they like Euros, Family games, Dexterity games and Party games.
That's pretty much my gaming history. Aside from that, I read, listen to music, play drums, shoot paintball, play games on the 360, and occasionally watch TV or Movies. I most recently worked as a Table Games Dealer at a local riverboat casino, but was laid off due to the recession and lack of business. Currently milking Unemployment Insurance for all it's worth, as well as going back to school for what could amount to various degrees in Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology.

Welcome to the boards, sir.
I have one question. How could you love a game which had weapon stat lines that made a laser rifle the mechanical equivalent of a longbow?

I'm no physicist, but even I noticed the flaws. Hell, every edition of the game has its flaws, but I a bit less enthralled by the current edition which is Armor-heavy and has everyone moving the same distance with generally the same amount of Wounds. Nostalgia is obviously creating bias here. If I were forced to pick an edition, I'd say the sweet spot was late 2nd edition, early 3rd. As an Ork player, they took all the personality out of them and completely changed the fluff. I was used to Ork units that were fun. The Shokk Attack Gun was cheese, but almost every thing the Orks had that generated some great effect had its fair chance of failing spectacularly, to the amusement of all, including the Ork player. Where's Makari? Where's the Runtherda, Zodgrod Wortsnagga? Even the Clans have been reduced to fluffy stuff.
Oh, and Matt Ward wasn't involved back then...

Kinda, I am the main organiser behind ToonCon, a convention in Saskatoon (this weekend!). It is our first year, so we are still learning what we are doing.
How many cons do you know of that have a Kremlin tourney?

I've been reading this site and various members' and regulars' blogs for some time now, so many many thanks to each and every person out there in Fortress:AT land who contributed to expanding my game knowledge and library. Without knowing it, several of of you are in many ways responsible for the large Heroscape collection I acquired last year.
I'm a long-time gamer, primarily on the console gaming side, having been in game development for as long as I can remember. I love reading up on board & card games and their mechanics, and if they happen to drip themes that I'm into, fantastic!
Anyhow, I hope to participate more, but even if I just end up lurking, thanks again to all of you folks for the insight and larger gaming closet o' fun.
