Another Pointless thread

So I have decided for some odd reason that this weekend I will download a new FPS from steam, since I use to love them back in the day but havn't played a single player one in ages.
What's a good one to start with? Bioshock is $20 on steam currently, but is there a GOTY edition or something I should grab instead?

Bioshock 2 comes out in 3 months, so why don't you just wait for that one? You've got enough games as it is, son.

Because
a) Bioshock 2 wont be $20
b) How the fuck will I know what is going on in bioshock 2 if I haven't played bioshock 1?

Hehe.

Have you thought about Doom 3? I thought that was a good FPS (I don't know if it is available or not though, but I bet if it is, it is cheap).

Eh, some asshole reads a bunch of Ayn Rand books, builds a big underwater city where he and all his fellow Rand fans can live together in society free of collectivist sentiment, and as you would expect, everyone goes nuts and kills each other. Then, you kill them.

Actually, Bioshock is one of the few games that held my interest long enough for me to play it all the way through. I'd say it's definitely worth $20.

Wow. Watching Randian 'objectivists' self-destruct and then killing any left standing. I'd really get into that! I must find a way to play this brilliant game.

You might also consider Half Life 2 or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for the same price. Of the three, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. would be my pick. Bioshock is an amazing game, but it's a pretty stagey experience, whereas S.T.A.L.K.E.R. makes you feel more like you're eking out a desperate living in the wasteland around Chernobyl. It's got incredible atmosphere, brutal firefights, and some genuinely frightening moments.

BIOSHOCK is a great game- it's one of those kind of cracked masterpieces that no, if you break it down and hyperanalyze the gameplay like people tend to do on the internet, is not perfect but the level of atmosphere and raw craft on display is quite amazing. It does have some very Ayn Randian subtexts, but it's also got a huge dose of SYSTEM SHOCK 2 and Orson Welles. My issue with the game was that the main enemies weren't very interesting, they were really just running/screaming zombies. The Big Daddies were awesome though. I also thought some of the bells and whistles, like the item creation thing, were sort of perfunctory.

The story is richer than most FPS games, it's really pretty compelling and it's told in a very interesting way. The setting is truly incredible, I found myself just walking around looking at stuff. And I think I've probably thought about something that was said, seen, or heard in the game every day since I finished it.

So don't wait for the sequel, $20 for one of the best games of this generation is a steal.

You also can't go wrong with the ORANGE BOX if you haven't played through all of that...and I'm pretty sure you'l love FALLOUT 3. DEAD SPACE has some problems, but it's worth playing as well. It's 3rd person, but very shootery.

If he's looking to buy it off Steam, he's looking for PC games.

Played Half Life 2 and episode 1 (they and doom 3 were the last single player FPS's I played)

Should I play Fall out 1 & 2 before playing 3?

I haven't played 3, but the first two are most certainly not FPS, but they are fantastic RPGs.

no you don't have to play the first 2 Fallouts before playing Fallout 3. Just jump into the 3rd one. It's sublime.

You haven't played HL2 yet with all its episodes? Yeah, you gotta play those. They're brilliant.

HL2 is awesome, but the freakin story isn't over. who knows when episode 3 will be released.

and Fallout 1 and 2 are probably better games than Fallout 3. all three are sweet though.
