I thought Marvelman was far superior to Watchmen. I'd also suggest it has a greater claim to being postmodern because it appeared four years earlier.

I gave Miracle Man a try, but the timing was unfortunate... I picked up the anal rape issue. As a homophobic young guy, I couldn't accept that, so I didn't bother buying any more. In fact, I steered clear of Moore's work for years after that. To be fair, I drifted away from comics in general in the early '90s, except for Sandman. I missed a few good comics and a shocking amount of bad comics during the '90s. But when I started buying comics again in 2000, two of the comics that I really got into were Top Ten and Promethea.

I've read a lot of Moore's stuff and here's what I'd recommend without hesitation:

SUPREME: SOTY is great. It takes you through every era of comics with such a love for detail. I was wowed. From the 4-color 1930's style origins through the outrageously overmuscled and big-tittied lens-flared 90's. In one little volume you can reap a lot of nostalgia.
I edited my post, I read some PROMETHEA and added that to the shitty pile. Too many words here about nothing. I could not get into this -at all-.

I enjoyed Promethea, but I can easily understand why others might not. For one thing, it almost reads like three different comics.
Promethea #1-11: Relatively straight-forward superhero comic fare, with subversive winks and nods. Also more entertainment value than probably all Wonder Woman comics ever written. Great artwork by J.H. Williams III. I loved these early issues.
Promethea #12-23: Alan Moore delivers a long lecture on magick, in the form of an adventure beyond our material plane of existence. There are also glimpses of a new Promethea in action back in the real world. J.H. Williams displays stunning versatility, especially with covers showcasing specific artistic styles of the past. These issues were very good.
Promethea #24-32: A return to a downbeat reality, as Promethea brings about the end of the world as we know it. The artwork is still strong, but the writing now feels somewhat decompressed and unfocused. The last couple of issues kind of bored me, and the very final issue actually unfolds into a huge, ill-conceived poster that is difficult to read. Issues #24-27 were okay I guess, but I didn't enjoy the last few issues.
