Feel free to slag off the 40 or so teenagers who also think this is bullshit (well not all of them but most of them) and they aren't fucking westerners. Your culture is not fucking protected.

Glad to be categorised a fucking shit because I criticise portrayal of women in Manga. Long may I be a fucking shit.

As an aside, can we get back to talking about games THAT MATTER again? None of us are buying this and all this is doing is raising the hit count for this game, which gives the publisher the illusion that people here WANT to see more.

Ugh.

I love Friday Freakouts as much as the next guy, more even, but this is getting kind of ridiculous. Let it go. Nobody will buy this but the people who would've bought it anyhow. You're not changing anyone's minds one way or the other.

The only thing good to come out of this is that we all agree that Steve Weeks is MORE disgusting than this, since he was banned and this wasn't. And to me, that's the funniest thing I've read all day, which is saying some shit.

One more note:

These chicks are ABSOLUTELY adults. Look at the faces.

I'm not calling you fucking shit for criticizing portrayal of women in Manga. I'm calling you fucking shit because you think that piece of shit cover art of Karate FIght is pedo stuff and then you equalize them with Hentai! Fucking shit.

And of course your female student would've minded about the cover, as they would over Incursion cover! But nooo, someone with his all seeing eyes decide one's adult, one's not.

Michael Barnes wrote: Where the culture DOES come into play is how Americans in particular see animated or comic characters and immediately think "that's for kids". That shuts off a lot of people's ability to see these kinds of drawings and think "hey wait- this is actually for adult men that want to look at images of sexualized children with exaggerated adult features". And I think that's one of the only reasons why lawmakers and other entities in the US in particular have never taken this stuff seriously as a source of pedo smut.

Aside from all of the overheated rhetoric about rights and wrongs and who's actually a pedophile or not because they are or aren't outraged, I'd just like to point out that the above statement is dramatically wrong about the US comic market. There's a fairly large section of the population that DOES think that comics/cartoons are "just for kids" by their very nature and which continues to accost and even prosecute comic shop owners for carrying anything that they believe might offend the sensibilities of a 10-year-old. From my perspective as a former publisher, that was the problem. We didn't want out local shops getting busted for selling "smut" to children, so we finally (after much argument) agreed to label some of the books we published. Nevertheless, even things that were specifically labeled "Not for children" often got store owners prosecuted because the public impression was that, by default, comics should be for kids. Only in the US is that the case.

Highly sexualized imagery sells? Newsflash: it always has, back to the beginning of human civilization (check out some classical Greek statuary sometime.) Adult men are interested in younger women? That's, uh, not news, either. But just because you find the images in poor taste doesn't mean that everyone else who's largely unconcerned with them (like Disgustipater, I saw that it was a manga/anime product and lost interest before even looking closer) is somehow enabling pedophilia or something equally inane.

And about the culture...

Do you even realize that in general manga and american comic have TOTALLY different ideals about woman?

In american super heroes comic, mostly they would have broad shoulders, relatively strong jaw & cheek bone (for female), proportionally ample bosom. All in all, they head toward adult woman in YOUR perspective.

On the other hand, manga heroes tend to be on the normal or even diminutive size, with less heroic face? All in all, they head toward underage girl in YOUR perspective. But not in OURS.

This is, for example, Alita. She's hundreds of year old, but by MY standards would be in late teen or early /mid 20s. She's a killing machine cyborg. Her face is not made cute to mask some thinly veiled pedo shit. We just have different ideal from you guys. And the story's hardly cute.

That's why your perception's messed up!

Doe eyed pedo stuff?

I had a similar argument with someone over prehistoric carvings, where anything that looks remotely female is considered to have been carved as a religious icon to a fertility goddess. A new one had been found that actually looked pretty damn good (the artist had some skillz) that didn't match other more hypersexualized renditions that you usually see from 40,000 years ago. It was still all T&A, but you could recognize a complete womanly form from it.

I mentioned in passing that maybe it was merely a rendition of Tina, the girl that lives three caves down instead of an item of epic religious significance. The "fertility goddess" thing has always struck me more as a Victorian apology for holding such an item in front of nice people instead of calling it what it is -- ancient porn. It also makes the discovery more publishable and noteworthy whether it actually is or not.

I was rebutted with this -- how could such a grotesque depiction on the human female form be considered an attempt at Tina? I didn't get to answer before someone else chimed in with the kind of art you're seeing here, not all of it out of the East. Impossible body forms clearly drawn to represent mortal humans, forms that simply can't exist even with surgery, appear to me to be something that has occurred for millenia. The hypersexualized form clearly appeals to somebody, and sure isn't designed for the church service.

The problem that I stumble across with this is when it's married to tertiary sexual characteristics like face proportions and cultural modes of dress. I'm not saying you should ban it, but a little up-front warning would be appreciated.

S.

Based on this thread, I think we should change the F:AT logo to something resembling this:

In my younger days, I have no doubt I could have beat this thing. I consider myself the Houdini of masturbation.

Actually, if you bothered to read the post, I did not equate the art to Hentai - what I actually said was 'looking forward to your defence of Hentai'. I'm not a fucking idiot. Of course I know the art isn't Hentai, Jesus.

I simply assumed that it wouldn't be long before I'm being told that Hentai is culturally acceptable as well.

However, I don't want to lose my status as a fucking shit just for being misread. I don't believe I commented on the Incursion cover so don't make assumptions.

Also, I am genuinely interested if this depiction of women is as Sevej states it. If this is so, then lots of other countries in the east would also produce comics with the same features (as Japan is not the only country out there). I'm not seeing this in Chinese comic depictions but it is possible that I'm not looking that hard. Do lots of countries draw women this way? Is this the norm in all Asian countries where they actually draw comics?

As previously mentioned, if they have tits, it cannot, by definition, be pedophilia. Something else that is creepy, by all means, but not pedophilia.

Please note that I am not defending it; anime is garbage.

No, anime isn't. There's tons of GREAT anime. Robotech is a great example, Captain Harlock, Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers, anything Studio Ghibli has ever done, and this doesn't begin to talk about anime like Akira, which is epic beyond comprehension. Ghost in the Shell is another example.

That said, the Asian predisposition toward the sexualization of women is sick, yet not unlike our thriving porn industry, or our apparent need to put naked chicks in every fucking "big" film in the last 30 years. I mean, there's films I'd love to see with my daughter but I can't because they have have to have a beaver shot or it's not going to sell (so thinks Hollywood Producers, at least). So, I'm not sure that there's a whole lot of room for Americans to toss stones at ultra-sexualized chicks in anime since we are the undisputed kings of sexualizing women.

Kiddie shit, totally different. But naked and half naked chicks are as much a part of America as Japan, and arguably moreso, since we have baby mamas popping out little ghetto rats like it's going out of style where the Japanese have taken to inventing sex pillows because they can't seem to be bothered to listen to their genes and FUCKING BREED

Obviously I meant, "My opinion is that anime is garbage." And I was generalizing; there are 2 or 3 that I like.
