They've spent an awful lot on advertising for it to just be some kind of free-to-play online game. There's more to the story, somewhere.

free to play...but its not free if you actually do anything.
these types of games come in all flavors and types, I've played Travian and some other space-based one which were cool. but the best parts of these games is building up alittle and then joining an alliance and coordinating attacks on other people. Evony makes you pay to send messages. uhm

The explanation for this is that you have to pay real money to get any upgrades or buildings or things. You even have to pay to send a message to another player.They've spent an awful lot on advertising for it to just be some kind of free-to-play online game. There's more to the story, somewhere.
But you can sit there and play the game without any of that stuff for free... and watch other players steamroll you because they bought better dudes.

There actually is no queen. I was reading about this game just this afternoon.
I found a thread on what looks to be their boards where they were asking players to submit pictures to be the evony queen. Quite creepy.

They probably get a lot of traffic just from those ads. Makes me wonder how a good site like F:AT could benefit from real advertising instead of word-of-mouth. I know its been discussed before, but it may be worth considering again after the site overhaul that Ubarose mentioned would happen.

at least the ads we get are vaguely game related...if you go onto other sites (like browser game sites and stuff) and its just a chick dressed in modern clothes with big boobs. looks more like a soft-core porn or dating website ad.

Apple allows IPhone app developers to easily implement this kind of thing. Maybe you're developing a RPG - you can easily charge the player to unlock characters, locations, items or whatever you can dream up. Want to resurrect your beloved character? That'll be $2.95 please. The player agrees to pay when prompted, they're automatically billed, you get paid and Apple takes their cut. Easy as pie.

I still despise Caylus and Race for the Galaxy more. Evony has a ways to go.
