Interesting. I wonder what a Twilight game done by FFG would look like.(Have not read the books or seen the movies, interested purely for interest's sake.)

I thought Schweig was refering to a Twilight Imperium adventure game.
It made cP's answer quite funny.

Barnes' description of harlequin romance for fantasy nerds is pretty much spot on. I'm also going to speculate that Martin will one day be discovered to have a closet child porn collection so large it makes Danny Choo blush.

Oh please. There are plenty of fantasy books out there that are far more comparable to bodice-rippers. Yes, Martin has some pulpy aspects to his work, but there is so much more as well. And the child porn comment is way over the top. Everyone knows that Martin has built his world loosely off medieval Europe, and the ages of his characters and their sexual experiences match that quite well. Perhaps you would prefer a book where all the characters were allowed to wait, and chose to wait until they were eighteen to have sex, but I at least would have found that disingenuous. A culture that sees life as cheap and fleeting is going to little about issues like age of consent.

I'm more or less with CP on this one... you can't give a fair critique of the Song of Fire and Ice setting without reading at least the first three books. It's getting really tiring to hear Barnes bitch about the quality of the series based on his admission that he didn't even finish the first book.

I'm guessing no more free FFG games for Barnes.

Listen, if he didn't like it, he doesn't have to finish it - not one book, let alone all three. I also think it's perfectly reasonable to dislike the books. But comparing them to Harlequin romances (on a craft level) is ridiculous hyperbole, and indefensible, as is claiming the property isn't hugely popular. GRRM's prose and writing is workmanlike. The writing in the series is better writing than Robert Jordan, by a good measure; as far as modern genre fantasists go, I'd say that only Daniel Abraham and R. Scott Bakker are writing at a consistently higher level, and the latter has his own problems. As for the rest - I was sent a first-release copies of the Abercrombie books (for review) , and the writing there is worse than a romance novel, so as little said about him the better.

On the other hand, claiming popularity equals quality is always rank idiocy.

I'm guessing no more free FFG games for Barnes.

I'm guessing (at least, hoping) you are wrong. That would be a silly decision for CP to make based on a disagreement like this.

What?! I don't know what book you read in the ASOIF series but having read them all there has never been anything even close to child porn-like content in these books.

Are you just making shit up?

Admittedly its been a while since I read it, but I do recall having that impression several times during the book. I'm happy that you all like it and it being a NY Times Bestseller is cool too since of course only top notch literature gets read by the masses. Now that I've stated my opinion that its shit this one time, which I feel I have every right to do, I'll move on and let the George RR Martin lovefest continue. I leave the constant bitching about the same stuff over and over again to true internet geeks like Barnes.

Yeesh! Saying crazy stuff about kiddy porn then running away seems like a cop-out.

Now excuse me while I go dry hump Mr. Martin. It's the unkempt beard you know.

Translation:

I can provide no substantive proof, nor page numbers, nor even vague generalities about my assertion that the man is a closet pedophile, though I am certain I am correct. Nevertheless, I will pretend to be happy that you like the work, even as I passive-aggressively accuse you of equating popularity with quality, though no one has done so in this thread. Now that I have restated my baseless assertions, which everyone on the internet has the right to do, I'll let the 'lovefest' (which has mostly consisted of mild statements of personal preference, mixed with criticism) continue. Even though I have commented on this topic multiple times, it is nevertheless true that I am not a sad geek who comments on topics like this, err, multiple times, and I'll leave this to those sad people who have commented multiple times, though I have admittedly commented on it. Multiple times.

I can get that shit on all the other web sites on the internet. People jab at each other a bit here and that's fine, but character assassination is for twelve-year-old losers. The new guys need to figure out that they're sitting at the adult table. They'd do well to start conducting themselves in a way that earns them some respect.
