I seriously think it is from bashing my head into the game for three hours last night. Stockholm syndrome.

I'm actually trying to gauge just how much of that frustration I can put up with from a board game. It seems alluring with KDM, but a large part of that allure is the game's unattainability for me at the moment. I'm just about ready to put Warhammer Quest: ACG into the trade pile. This worries me because parts of DS remind me of the frustration I've had with WQ. e.g. It doesn't matter how much coordination I just did with all of my dudes' actions and memorizing that AI deck because I just rolled shitty and lost the battle. Do-over... That could get tedious fast.

While the boss fight is quite interesting, the memory element is stupid. I know it's thematic, but really for a board game it's not a skill I want to rely on. I'd just lay down the cards after the first random set get played. Not sure what's with the "node system". Seems just like a oblique/staggered grid. Just as stupid as Unsung Story's triangular grid. Tiles suffer the same issue as Gears of War's. I like the minis, but that's saying very little about the board game development team...

Broke 1.4 million. The comment section is a trip. So many people just begging for more characters. I only played the first game, and not terribly far. I don't know who any of these monsters even are.

Oh, and some jackass saying he doesn't understand why people feel "entitled" to see a rulebook "for free". Idiot.

Mr. White's - BadWrongFun....

I know I was not brought upon this world to get it, but I don't get this at all...

I mean, if I like the game Street Fighter II...then I'll go play SFII. I don't think SFII the deckbuilder is really going to serve the same thing.

So, for fans of Dark Souls...why not just go play Dark Souls? What will this boardgame bring to the Dark Souls experience? Is it even the same as the videogame or just like any other umpteenth number dungeon crawls?

Why is this so sought after?

My first thought is that it would be fun to take on these bosses in a local multiplayer setting, which is not something you can do with the videogame.

Fuck it, I put down on it. There's enough there at this point that it seems like a good bet and if it turns out to be worthwhile, I'll want it all and those little add-on expansions would jack the retail price way up over $113.

Here's the thing about it. Dark Souls has a very specific, very unique fantasy setting. It has this very surrealist angle and style, very reminiscent of the Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski and Swiss artist Arnold Bocklin. With just a slight touch of Frazetta and Jack Vance-style monsters in it. And the designers have repeatedly mentioned Fighting Fantasy as a key influence. So the setting is very unique even among other fantasy games. And the gameplay has this Groundhog Day/Edge of Tomorrow like loop that is unlike anything else in games. So if they are really serious about doing this- and they'd better be in a Kickstarter that is going to cross $2 million this weekend- then hopefully those things will translate to a tabletop game.

It could be a disaster. If it is, I'll cash out the pledge if it starts looking bad.

I'm really kind of hoping that it turns out something like Doomrock, where the "exploration" part is more abstracted than the boss encounters, which are more detailed.

I would love them to fill in the gaps with the gameplay in non-boss battles, etc. There's just no way I can commit that kind of money with no named designer from an unknown game company unless I have rules and/or a good gameplay example. The absolute, #1 thing I would need to see/understand is if there's some sort of progression or equipment upgrade system and how that would work. They give no idea of how that works in the stuff out so far and who needs 10,000 expansions and whatnot without some fun way to work your way through.

I will admit that once the billion stretch goals are unlocked the value proposition looks way, way better... and it's one of those things you could easily resell if you didn't want it.

Could you really easily re-sell it? The thing with these giant kickstarters is that TONS of copies get out there. This thing will not be rare.

I'm annoyed at how the comments asking for rules and other details are routinely ignored. It's all about 'hey let's hit that next stretch!'

^^good point. The ones that go for big are the ones with exclusives and/or were limited print gonzo jobs (Kingdom Death)

I saw a quoted response from Steamforged somewhere which said there couldn't be unfinished rules floating around the internet because Bandai won't allow it with the IP. If that's the case, I doubt we'll see rules. Some more videos maybe.

I would not be surprised at all if there were some clueless suits and B/N who are all like "what? We can't put the rulebook online!"
