FFG announces Star Wars: Destiny

A new collectible dice/card game. Not sure what to make of this, seems almost simple enough to get kids into it like the Pokemon card game, but at the same time cards + dice seems a little confusing? I'd check it out but kinda smells like a flop. But then that Dicemasters game seems to be popular, so what do I know?

Hey, I'm an old bugger and I think they look cool so a good chance this will do well - lots of colour and images, collection, dice to roll, kids (and kidults) will probably love it.

I quite liked Dicemasters, and I think this looks good as well. It won't be as cheap to buy a couple of boosters which is a downer, but then it's no worse than a pack of Magic cards. And I like that you seemingly don't have to build your team while playing, but can actually use your dice right away. That being said, howeever, all of the new trilogy is a major turn off. I know it's silly, but I hate those movies so violently that I consider them absolutely non-canonical.

Not for our gen though, for the next lot of fans being inducted.

I think you're right, Southern. But at the same time I like the idea of just tossing around with the characters and playing a game that tells stupid stories. I just hate those movies so much that I can't really see past the bad stuff and acknowledge what is somewhat cool. Also, I'm dreading that if my kids see this game they'll start ask about Darth Maul and then they'll insist on seeing the movies. Which they won't be allowed to do. Luckily they don't read English. Yet.

I find that when a game is stripped down to just a mechanic (deckbuilder) or a component (Yahtzee), there is unlikely to be any sense of theme, narrative or setting. Usually that results in a game that feels more like a task than a form of recreation.

I had to reread this bit, wondering to which you were referring...there is now (soon to be plural) newer SW. 1999 SW isn't so new either!

According got the marketing copy, this game will finally give us the best of Star Wars- Qui-Gon Jinn versus Jabba the Hutt and the opening crawl of The Phantom Menace.

I actually made my saving throw against Star Wars on this one...

Columbob, the new movies aren't a trilogy yet. And I probably should say ep 1-3, but in my head that will always be the original trilogy

This looks like an easy pass for me. I love pretty much all things Star Wars but I don't do LCGs and I don't do collectible games. The constant addition of more and more content just drives me nuts and my "gotta catch em all" sickness makes me spend way more money than I should. So for the past 5 years or so I've actively avoided both LCGs and CCGs.
