Doubts About Age of Conan

Well, having played our first game tonight, I'll add my thoughts. I did enjoy the game, although it's probably better with more than 2 players. It gave me the impression that even though it has a great variety of possible actions, it actually should play very fast once you know the rules well. The limited number of available actions really helps here...

So in that light, it seems to me the abstractness of the theme was a good choice. Anyway, I didn't mind how the mechanics for Conan's adventures worked, and to me it clearly puts the main focus of the game away from him. Yes, Conan is important in the game because using him well will help you a lot, but the game is really about the empires, so the way Conan and his adventures has been heavily abstracted is fine to me. It doesn't bog the game down, and adds a little something that spices the main game up...

I look forward to trying the game again...

Does news of the expansion Adventures in Hyboria dispell doubts?

Maybe it is my bias against rondel games, but a mood wheel doesn't sound like an improvement....

It might work. The problem wasn't anything about the game that was deeply flawed. In fact, it was a good game just not a great one. I think if the expansion adds something distinctive, it could push it up a notch. I'd be cautious and wouldn't consider it a "no brainer" but I'll look heavily at it.
