It is Official: I am now Irrelevant!

Yes my friends, it is official. I have been declared irrelevant in the gaming world by Derk and Octavian.

I am not bitter about it, I have to accept this judgement from these two Game Titans. Afterall, they have spoken. So for me, its time to pick myself up and dust myself off and begin again on the long road of study and once again plug in to the gaming scene that is so rich and vibrant and that I cherish so deeply.

As I begin my long road to relevance, I want to study the true masters. The true relevant individuals in boardgaming. As I began to put a list together of the most relevant members in boardgaming, I found that it was a very difficult task indeed.

Who are the most relevant people in boardgaming?

Can someone provide me a list so I can seek out their guidance and wisdom?

Well Tom Vasel and some TOSer must be up there, as FFG are posting their names in lights as reviewers of Android, so start there. I'm sure if you dropped by at Tom's with a free game you'll get the deluxe course.

Interesting tidbit:

A guy from my college graduating class was Mr. Irrelevant in the 2003 NFL Draft. He was also part of the TV show The Bachelorette last season.

Mad*Gamer,

This hobby is about playing games. Not buying games, not collecting games, not taking pictures of games and not belonging to websites about games. Just play the games and have fun, and don't worry about that other stuff if it starts bothering you.

You know, it really needs to be a grassroots effort that starts with the people that play games. Just give the people they want through strategic pandering and a faux sense of political correctness. Quit asking so many non-passive agressive questions (your current post is a prime example of what to avoid in the future) and promote all view points. But, specifically these are the biggest tenents

1. All games are good, short ones are great
2. Ignore #1 if it is a mass market game.
3. Randomness is bad because the game can no longer be determined by sheer force of brainpower
4. Player elimination is bad because everyone is important and no one should have their feelings hurt by being kicked out of the game. If at all possible, try to make "participation ribbons" for everyone before your game night. Remember, inclusiveness is better than exclusiveness.

Now, projecting this public persona will allow you to accomplish quite a few things behind the scenes. For examples, #4 can be used as an excuse to create your own exclusive gatherings (e.g., GoF) with the stated purpose of "creative processes" that of course will promote more games for the user. Promoting #1 and #2 will create a positive feedback system that gives you an in with small companies, providing a positive revenue stream; this process can continue for the indefinite future. #3 creates a #3 and #4 creates a false sense of community that can serve as a safe-haven for "tortured geniuses", which in reality is a front for extracting cash from them because they are likely to have disposable income due to their lack of friends.

You are on your way to being a Gaming Titan too -- just tone down the retoric, be everyone's best friend, and start generating what I like to call "internet respect". Then, you will start raking in the cash. Simples as 1, 2, 3.

Good news: Derk and Octavian don't determine relevance.

Bad news: If you give a shit what Derk and Octavian think of you, you have more serious problems than we can help you with.

You still doing podcasts, steve?

Don't sweat it Weeks, in the grand scheme of things there really isn't anything more irrelevant than board games. Being an irrelevant figure in an irrelevant hobby ain't so bad. I can give you some pointers on how to deal with it if you need 'em.

Thank you Space Ghost for your detailed answer. I would just like some clarification on point #3. if as you say in your Relevancy Thesis that random factors are bad then this certainly eliminates games with dice. You go on to say that games without a random element provide a "safe haven" for the tortured genius AKA Clearclaw.

But certainly one can not expect to eliminate dice, one of the oldest gaming devices known to man and still be in a a hobby called boardgaming can we?

And what happens to the "tortured genius" that uses dice? Does this create such stress as to cause eratic behavior such as calling people as myself irrelevant?

If for the sake of argument that we say Alan Moon is relevant in a irrelevant hobby. Doesn't that make Alan Moon more irrelvant than me because since the hobby itself is irrelvant and Alan sees himself as relevant then I am really more relavant than him because I accept my irrelevance?

I've mentioned this on other threads, but it needs tobe pointed out again. Steve has a wicked case of give-a-shit-itis. We should send him an unguent of some sort, clear that right up.

Yeah -- got to quit giving a shit. Fucking "eurogamers" are dragging you down. Shed the concern and start steamrolling people with Ameritrash retoric.

The only thing with relevance on the web is porn. I'm not endorsing it, I'm just saying more people come looking for it than anything else and it's always the most technologically sophisticated medium on the planet. In the 80's we worried about something like Skynet becomes self aware, but in reality we should be worried about internet porn becoming self aware. Hell even if you were to approach someone who was very anti-porn and asked them which was more relevant, porn or board gaming, they would laugh and tell you board gaming sounded dorky.
