Blood Bowl - Official Website Up

Is this a game that you keep two fleshed out teams ready for occasional play -OR- do you concentrate on only one team and find other Blood Bowl players?
Pretty sure I know the answer and am in denial. I want BB but I'm not sure I have what it needs.
You can play it straight out of the box with the ready-made Orcs and Humans teams for one-off games, or tailor them a bit as Mr. White mentioned. The best experience though would be a league with multiple players and teams.

Mayhem and Event cards?

I know right? I think Necromunda is 3rd in line. After Blood Bowl, Adeptus Titanicus is supposed to come out, there as been info leaked about it, but I don't think anyone has seen anything. My guess is we won't see Necromunda until late 2017, if then.

That's in line with what I have seen. I am extremely disappointed that Adeptus Titanicus is supposed to be Forgeworld only because that makes it very inconvenient to purchase for me.

The bulk of the specialist games are going to be under the Forgeworld banner I believe. Blood Bowl is going to get Skaven and Dwarf teams in plastic and then I think everything else is coming through Forgeworld and will be resin.

My preference would be for all of the core games to have a starter that is released in widely available plastic instead of direct-from-Forgeworld resin. For most of the games, I guess it doesn't really bother me. Blood Bowl, Necromunda, Mordheim, I can buy a single squad/team/warband and call it good. If they plan on eventually pushing AT to full Epic, I want to easily get bulk troops without needing to pay the very high FW prices. I love FW sculpting, but when units are going to be 8mm that detail is going to be mostly lost.

The mayhem and event cards are likely the same as the ones in BB LRB6, just printed out in a nice format. These are optional cards and not part of the core game. Great fun in one-offs, kinda fun in league play, never seen them in tournaments.

I find the BB rules and overall game design pretty amazing. But, it took me awhile to read through the rules to understand what was going on. I think the "dated comments" are coming because modern gamers aren't used to pouring through a detailed rule book and are used to more streamlined games--they also don't like D6's. Yet, there's so much payoff here. Once I broke through the rule barrier in BB, there was a huge payoff--this was a pleasant surprise. I'm now on to admiring the grand BB design for strategy, tactics, and team building. There are so many choices. I feel invested when a team member advances, gains a new skill, and, of course, dies.

But mainly, when I look at the actual game, as a standalone thing, its got some tactics, and strategy, different special powers for players, a cool visual aesthetic, you chuck some dice and have some fun
So why would I not play Heroscape instead? Answer: I would play Heroscape instead, which does away with all the messing about modelling and painting, has loads of different units and variety, has tactics and strategy, variable maps and lovely looking minis and can play more than 2 players in an actual game. It has drafting rather than campaign rules, but there you go. It feels like Heroscape is more honest and isnt pretending to be something it isnt.
Blood Bowl looks kind of neat, like a lot of these GW games (still think if you take away the interest in the minis and painting theres not always quite so cool left behind), but I don't see the point of playing it over Heroscape. Just my opinion man

Disclaimer: I've never played Heroscape.
You sort of answered your own question. You play it for the RPG/team building aspects (which while made magnitudes better with a larger group is perfectly feasible with just two players building their teams head-to-head over time) and the connection to the sports/humor theme of the game. I don't think BB is pretending to be anything, its pretty clear what it is trying to achieve. It also happens to be the most fun board game of all time when you do buy into its "schtick", which you are able to do with heroscape minis and a grid if you choose to do so.

That being said the game is best in league format. Which is also my biggest hesitation into buying into it (again). Finding opponents is the biggest issue in this hobby. Finding someone to play a one off is difficult (kids, jobs, yardwork, football, whatever get in the way of meeting up), finding several someones to play in a league might be impossible.
I picked up a guildball team this summer and have managed to play three times. I really enjoy X-wing, but the two local groups have fallen apart.
Although there is a pretty regular group playing 40K at my local group, so maybe the transition to BB could be possible.
Also the new range roller is stupid. But the themed dice, I do want a set of Orc dice.
