Despite the protagonist being a 14 y.o. girl, you need to watch TRUE GRIT, if only for the facial hair.

Ironclad - The story of King John I and how he tried to get out from under the Magna Carta. Great midieval(sp?) battle scenes.

Arn - The story of a Swedish Knigh Templar who fought in the Holy Land and then returned home to help unify his country.

Sherlock - A BBC miniseries that puts a modern day spin on Sherlock Holmes & Dr Watson. Really cool.

Thanks to Una for breaking this into its own thread and thanks for the suggestions so far. Can you please also tell me where I can find your recommendation so I don't have to hunt?

On Netflix Streaming:

1)The Longest Day. A great ensamble cast in a movie that distills the complex actions of that day into a story you can follow. A Bridge Too Far attempted to emulate this same formula but I think failed.

2) The Terminator The original and the best. You've seen it before, I've seen it before. It's still great.

3) Brick: Film noir in high school. Quite a good movie.

BRICK is good movie, but I would think it's definitely couples-capable. I thought Steve was after movies he can't/won't watch with better 3/4's around.

TRUE GRIT on Netflix streaming. Again: amazing facial hair, gory as FUCK ALL sometimes. Ugh. Coes Bros!

Depends on the wife, but ARCHER is dag nasty sometimes and hilarious. Netflix streaming.

GOMORRAH, modern cosa nostra film. Really good--subtitles! Netlfix streaming.

CRONOS is good, but out of rotation on streaming, aw. Same goes for HEIST.

Oooh, RONIN is on Netflix streaming.

Eh, these are fine but there's better.

Netflix has gone freaking crazy lately. I think their problems have made them desperate for content so they're getting this totally unexpected stuff lately- much of it Italian. And Italian exploitation movies are often VERY manly. There's a bunch of Spaghetti Westerns on there now, and you should see them- The Mercenary, God Forgives- I Don't, Death Rides a Horse, and Duck You Sucker in particular. There's also Navajo Joe (with a singing Burt Reynolds, that's pretty manly), Sabata (with Lee Van Cleef)...I think Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is on there, definitely worth seeing.

There's a bunch of Italian cop movies too which are generally pretty manly. As in, I don't think any woman would watch them. Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man is a good one. It's directed by Ruggero Deodato, who later did Cannibal Holocaust. The beginning of the movie is NUTS. The most violent purse snatching you've ever seen. There's a bunch more that showed up out of nowhere, many that I've never seen.

There's also a SHITLOAD of 1960s sword-and-sandal movies, which are super manly, unappealing to women, and mostly pure trash. Hercules in the Haunted World is the best one, it's directed by Mario Bava and Christopher Lee is in it. Search on Hercules and anything that's not a Kevin Sorbo thing is probably good for some manly fun. I'm really surprised there aren't any Maciste movies (sort of an off-brand Hercules)

Let's see...Play Dirty with Michael Caine (North Africa campaign- good stuff)...Our Man Flint/In Like Flint of course...oh, Zulu- gotta see Zulu. Manly man movie. The Seven-Ups, a semi-sequel to the French Connection is pretty manly. Roy Scheider.

Doctor Goldfoot and the Bikini Bombs?

Fire and Ice, the Ralph Bakshi/Frank Frazetta cartoon...Flesh + Blood, a pre-Robocop Paul Verhoven medieval thing with lots of men being men in a medieval fashion.

How about Dirty Harry? Can't go wrong with that, still one of the best "fascist cop" movies.

There's always Patton...I don't think any female has ever made it through the entire picture.

One of the best 1970s carsploitation films, hands down. The helicopter stuff at the end is the kind of stuntwork you will NEVER see again.

Fire and Ice, the Ralph Bakshi/Frank Frazetta cartoon..

Good Lord, Mike, put down the crack pipe before you burn yourself. Fire and Ice a good movie? Are you out of your mind. That movie is pure garbage. Absolute crap.

ALL chicks in ANY movie are "really cute".

In fact, if you go to watch any film you can expect to see cute female in it.

It's the only consistency in the film industry.
