What Minis Are You Painting?

On top of that, the Lost Patrol genestealer models are fairly old sculpts, I think. So, they are a pain in the ass to paint and not as well-made detail wise as the newer models. I might just be pissed because of the spill...

And, everywhere in town is out of black paint -- both Citadel and Army Painter -- which I need for some Gorechosen dudes. WTF.

You could try using some brush cleaner on it.

It strips acrylics very well, but is not a strong solvent.

Yeah, those LP Genestealers were terrible...mine look like total shit. I tried to do them with a sort of dirty bone carapace and the fleshy parts an olive green. They just look murky and gross. The Scouts turned out OK, but I sort of botched everything in the box by doing a crap prime job on them. Everything was fuzzy, had to dunk them in Simple Green for a few days and scrub it off.

I'm working on the Ogroid Thaumaturge. About an hour or so in, half done...it's looking OK, the tattoos on that thing are hard to do at my level.

Gorechosen showed up from Dan's today so I might drop everything and do it next since it's just four figures. I'm most excited about doing that Skink Starpriest from Arcane Heroes when it comes in. I have a feeling it will lead into a Seraphon army.

I stick with a simple base for Tyranids (Hive Fleet Kraken) like this :

Edit: In general, I find Tyranids not fun to paint or assemble because of their basic look (lots of nooks and crannies with an overall hunched stance).

It indeed looks great.

I did up a tutorial about 6 years back on how do to genetealers quickly.

Thanks!

What's nice about the skin steps is it looks good after each step. So you can stop when you get bored.

edit: White. Heavy sepia wash. Bone on everything but the darkest areas. Very diluted white on the highest, rounded areas.

I am sure there is a similar pattern that would work for most base colors. Red might be a little tough without shading to pink, but everything else is probably doable.

My first Word Bearer from Betrayal at Calth. I finally got all 38 minis assembled. I'm sure my technique will evolve, but I think he turned out... okay.

That's my 3 part skeleton recipe.
* base bleached bone
* wash with sepia
* a little drybrush/highlight with skull white

Looks good. I like the script on the gauntlet.

How did you do your red? It's unique looking and I'm trying to find interesting ideas for my Khorne prince.

Please post pics of your Ogroid when you finish. I'm losing momentum on Silver Tower and this is one the last ones I plan to paint. I'm not sure how I want to paint it and I need some inspiration. Thanks!

A few pages back I showed how to paint it with just a handful of washes.

That genestealer reminded me that I had done a few many years ago. They're in a photodump of some older minis I posted last year.
They're no where near as good as yours, barrowdown, but I also went the bone color route.

That red is simply Citadel Mephiston Red. I then took a generic pink and tried to do some edging like they show in the Betrayal at Calth manual, but I don't have the robotic dexterity of the GW painters.

Awesome.

I love the Chaos sorcerer looking one from Dungeonquest. Actually, I love all the Dungeonquest ones, but that pink on blue is a great look.

The Horrors' look is great too. I love winter-themed basing. Those minis are so much better than their current ones.
